Friday, November 6: As I listed the meanings for each card in my Celtic Cross reading tonight, I wondered what would "happen" if I mistook the card layout (say, listed "environment" rather than "hope" for one position). The more I think about it, the less apt I am to get all excited.
It's not that I think the "magic" will be gone. I think the cards use the layout as a suggestion, and if I think the eighth card should be "hope," that's how I will read it. That is the significance of the card for me, so that validates it.
Is that the same as re-assigning a meaning for the card? Three of Swords now will mean "happy frolicking puppies" rather than three swords through a heart? I don't think so. I think the cards are a clue for us, an archetype. We can no longer assess a "wrong" meaning for an archetype/symbol than we can swim underwater without gillyweed. What translates to "bad luck" in Lithuania isn't the same as in New York, but we get it.
I did only my own reading tonight, a Celtic Cross.
Covers: King Swords
Crosses: 7 Cups
Beneath: 10 Wands
Behind: Tower
Crowns: 10 Pentacles
Before: 4 Pentacles (I misread as 3 and was a tad confused because the image and meaning didn't match)
Self: 7 Wands
Environment: 8 Swords
Hope: 9 Pentacles
Outcome: Page Cups
